HVAC Glossary in Plain English

80+ HVAC terms that actually show up in quotes, service reports, and inspection docs — translated into homeowner English, from SEER2 to zoning.

Every HVAC quote and inspection report throws around acronyms and jargon. Here are the terms that actually matter, organized by category and translated into plain English.

Sizing & efficiency terms

  • Ton: 12,000 BTU/hr of cooling. A 3-ton system = 36,000 BTU/hr.
  • BTU: British Thermal Unit. Energy to heat 1 lb of water 1°F.
  • SEER: Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (pre-2023 test standard). Cooling output per unit electricity.
  • SEER2: SEER measured under the 2023+ updated test standard. Higher = better; most of this region's new equipment runs 14+.
  • EER / EER2: Energy Efficiency Ratio. Efficiency at one specific outdoor temp (a peak-load snapshot) rather than SEER's seasonal average.
  • HSPF2: Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (2023+). Same idea as SEER2 but for heat pump heating.
  • AFUE: Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. % of gas turned into heat by a furnace.
  • COP: Coefficient of Performance. Heat pump efficiency at a specific outdoor temp — COP 2.0 means $2 of heat for every $1 of electricity.
  • Manual J: ACCA-standard load calculation to size a system properly for your specific home.
  • Manual D: ACCA-standard method for sizing and designing ductwork to match a Manual J load.
  • Manual S: ACCA-standard method for selecting the actual equipment model that matches your Manual J load.

Equipment terms

  • Condenser: outdoor unit; releases the heat pulled from inside the home.
  • Compressor: the "engine" of the outdoor unit; pressurizes refrigerant to move heat.
  • Evaporator coil: indoor coil that absorbs heat from air (mounted on/in the furnace or air handler).
  • Air handler: indoor unit for all-electric systems (equivalent of a furnace but with no burner).
  • Furnace: gas- or electric-fired indoor unit that burns fuel or uses resistance heat to warm air.
  • Heat pump: one outdoor unit that both heats and cools by moving heat instead of generating it.
  • Ductless mini-split: a heat pump or AC system with no ductwork — one outdoor unit feeding one or more wall-mounted indoor heads.
  • Package unit: a single outdoor cabinet holding both the condenser and the air handler (common on roofs or slabs, no separate indoor unit).
  • Blower: the fan inside the furnace/air handler that pushes conditioned air through the ducts.
  • Heat exchanger: the sealed metal chamber in a furnace where combustion gases heat the air without mixing into it.
  • Capacitor: a small electrical component that gives the compressor and fan motors the jolt they need to start.
  • Contactor: an electrically controlled switch that turns the outdoor unit's power on and off.
  • Lineset: pair of copper refrigerant lines between indoor and outdoor units.
  • Flue: the vent pipe that carries combustion exhaust from a gas furnace or water heater outside.

Airflow & ductwork terms

  • Ductwork: sheet metal or flex tubing that carries conditioned air.
  • Plenum: main duct trunk right off the furnace/air handler.
  • Trunk line: the large main duct that branch lines split off from.
  • Branch line: a smaller duct that runs from the trunk line to an individual room's register.
  • Return air: air pulled back into the system from your rooms to be reconditioned.
  • Supply air: conditioned air delivered into your rooms.
  • Grille / register: the vent cover on a wall, floor, or ceiling where air enters or exits a room.
  • Damper: an adjustable plate inside ductwork that controls how much air flows to a zone or room.
  • Static pressure: air pressure inside the ducts, measured in inches of water column. High = usually undersized or restricted ducts.
  • ACH (air changes per hour): how many times the air in a space is fully replaced in an hour — used in ventilation and load calculations.

Refrigerant terms

  • R-22 (Freon): older refrigerant, phased out of new-equipment production in the U.S. in 2020. Systems still using it are replacement candidates.
  • R-410A (Puron): the refrigerant used in nearly all residential systems installed before 2025. Per 2025 EPA AIM Act rules, it's no longer used in new residential equipment — existing R-410A systems can still be serviced and recharged.
  • R-454B: the A2L refrigerant now standard in most new residential AC and heat pump equipment under the 2025 EPA AIM Act phasedown of R-410A.
  • A2L: the EPA/ASHRAE safety classification for the new generation of mildly flammable, lower-GWP refrigerants (R-454B, R-32) replacing R-410A in new equipment.
  • R-32: a lower-GWP A2L refrigerant some manufacturers (notably Daikin) use in place of R-410A.
  • GWP (Global Warming Potential): a measure of how much a refrigerant contributes to warming compared to CO2 — the driver behind the R-410A-to-A2L transition.
  • Charge: the amount of refrigerant in the system, measured by weight. Under- or over-charged systems lose efficiency.
  • Subcooling: how many degrees below its condensing temperature the liquid refrigerant is — used by techs to verify a correct charge on fixed-orifice systems.
  • Superheat: how many degrees above its boiling point the refrigerant vapor is — used by techs to verify a correct charge on TXV systems.
  • Recovery / evacuation: pulling old refrigerant out of a system (recovery) and pulling a vacuum on it (evacuation) before recharging — both legally required steps.

Comfort & air quality terms

  • Delta T: temperature difference between return and supply air. 18-22°F is healthy for AC.
  • Latent capacity: how much moisture the system removes.
  • Sensible capacity: how much temperature the system drops.
  • RH: Relative Humidity. Target 40-55% indoors for comfort and mold prevention.
  • Dew point: the temperature at which air becomes saturated with moisture — a better real-world comfort gauge than humidity % alone.
  • Short-cycling: system turns on/off too quickly. Bad for efficiency and equipment life.
  • IAQ (Indoor Air Quality): the overall cleanliness and healthiness of the air inside your home.
  • VOC (Volatile Organic Compound): gases released by paints, cleaners, and furniture that can affect indoor air quality.
  • MERV rating: Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value — a 1-16 scale for how well a filter traps particles. Most residential systems run 8-13.
  • HEPA filter: captures 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns; rarely used whole-house (too airflow-restrictive), more common in standalone purifiers.
  • Humidifier: adds moisture to dry winter air; whole-home units tie into the ductwork.
  • Dehumidifier: removes excess moisture; whole-home units tie into the ductwork separately from the AC's normal dehumidification.

Controls & zoning terms

  • Thermostat: the control that tells your system when to run. Smart/Wi-Fi models add scheduling and remote access.
  • Zoning system: dampers plus multiple thermostats that let different areas of the home be heated/cooled independently.
  • Zone damper: the individual motorized damper in a zoning system that opens/closes to control airflow to one zone.
  • Setback: a scheduled temperature change (e.g. warmer while you're away) used to save energy.
  • Aux heat / heat strips: backup electric resistance heat that kicks in on a heat pump when outdoor temps drop too low for the heat pump alone.
  • Reversing valve: the component that lets a heat pump switch between heating and cooling mode.

Maintenance & diagnostics terms

  • Tune-up: a scheduled inspection/cleaning visit (usually 1-2x/year) that catches small problems before they become breakdowns.
  • Preventive maintenance agreement: an annual service plan bundling tune-ups and priority scheduling.
  • Amp draw: the electrical current a motor or compressor pulls — techs check it against nameplate specs to catch a failing component early.
  • Combustion analysis: testing a gas furnace's flue gases to confirm safe, efficient burning.
  • CO (carbon monoxide) test: a safety check for gas furnaces to confirm no dangerous exhaust leak into the home.
  • Ignitor: the component that lights the burners on a modern gas furnace (replaced standing pilot lights on most units built after the 1990s).
  • Flame sensor: a safety component that shuts the furnace down if it doesn't detect a burning flame.
  • Draft inducer: a small fan that pulls combustion exhaust through the heat exchanger and out the flue.
  • Coil cleaning: removing dirt/debris from the evaporator or condenser coil to restore heat transfer efficiency.
  • Leak search: finding the source of a refrigerant leak (electronic sniffer, UV dye, or nitrogen pressure test) before a system is recharged.

Ratings, codes & certifications

  • ACCA: Air Conditioning Contractors of America; publishes the Manual J/D/S standards.
  • AHRI rating: certified performance data (efficiency, capacity) for a matched indoor/outdoor equipment set, verified by the Air-Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute.
  • Energy Star: a federal efficiency certification for equipment that exceeds minimum federal standards.
  • NATE certification: North American Technician Excellence — an industry credential for HVAC technicians.
  • EPA 608 certification: the federal certification required to legally buy, handle, and recover refrigerant.
  • Permit: the local building-department approval required for most HVAC replacements and new installs.
  • Load calculation: the engineering math behind correctly sizing equipment to a home (see Manual J) — the opposite of guessing by square footage.
  • IECC: International Energy Conservation Code — the baseline energy code many local jurisdictions adopt for new HVAC installs.
Key takeaway. SEER2, Manual J, AFUE, ton, and BTU are still the five terms you'll see most in every quote — but if you're replacing equipment in 2026, add R-454B and A2L to that list too.
