Repair or Replace Your AC? The 5-Signs Rule
A field-tested checklist we walk every Salina homeowner through before quoting a repair — use it on any HVAC quote, ours or not.

"Should I repair or replace?" is the single biggest HVAC decision homeowners face. The wrong answer costs thousands either way — repairing a dying system throws good money after bad; replacing a system with 5 good years left wastes capital. Here's the 5-signs rule we use on every Central Kansas service call.
Sign #1: The $5,000 Rule
Multiply the age of the system (in years) by the repair cost. If it's over $5,000, replace. A $600 repair on a 10-year-old system: $6,000 → replace. A $600 repair on a 5-year old system: $3,000 → repair.
This rule captures the "you'll spend it eventually" reality — older systems have more failures coming, not fewer.
Sign #2: The refrigerant question
If your system uses R-22 (Freon), replace. R-22 was phased out federally in 2020. Repairing an R-22 system means paying $200+/lb for recycled refrigerant that gets more expensive every year. R-410A and newer R-32 systems are fine to repair.
Sign #3: Multiple failures in the same season
Two or more service calls in the same season is your system telling you it's on the edge. Once you're past the compressor's design life (usually 12-15 years), one failure often triggers the next.
Sign #4: Energy bills climbing without behavior change
If your July electric bill is 20%+ higher than the same July two years ago and you haven't changed thermostat settings, the system is losing efficiency. Aging compressors, leaking refrigerant, and dirty coils all show up as higher bills before they show up as breakdowns.
Sign #5: Comfort is inconsistent
Rooms that used to cool evenly now don't. Humidity you didn't have before. Long run times without hitting setpoint. All symptoms of a compressor or airflow system past its prime.
How to use this rule
Any TWO of the five signs = replace. Any ONE of them = fix it and start budgeting for replacement in the next 18-24 months. Zero signs but a big repair = fix it and move on.
