That first sub-freezing night in Salina always finds the broken furnaces. Save yourself an emergency call by running this 7-step checklist in September or early October.

The 7-step homeowner checklist

• 1. Replace the air filter.
• 2. Test-run the furnace on a cool morning. Set thermostat to 75°F, let it run 15-20 min. Listen for unusual noises; smell for any hot-metal or gas odors on first startup (mild is normal — strong is not).
• 3. Verify the exhaust vent (flue) is clear of bird nests, snow-cap covers, and debris.
• 4. Check the fresh-air intake (if you have a high-efficiency furnace) — same check.
• 5. Verify CO detector batteries and test the alarm button.
• 6. Check the humidifier if you have one — replace the pad, turn on the water supply.
• 7. Book the professional tune-up. Before Halloween.

Watch for these warning signs

• Rumbling or delayed ignition (boom on startup).
• Yellow flame instead of blue (call us — combustion issue).
• Furnace runs but no heat.
