How a Heat Pump Works in a Kansas Winter

The single biggest myth about heat pumps on the Plains — and the real numbers that prove they still beat electric strip heat on the coldest morning of the year.

A modern cold-climate heat pump doesn't stop working when Salina drops below freezing — it just works differently. Instead of burning gas, it moves heat: even at 0°F, there's enough thermal energy in outdoor air for an inverter compressor to pull inside. Real-world efficiency stays above 200% (COP > 2.0) down to about 5°F on a Daikin Fit — meaning for every $1 of electricity, you get $2 of heat.

The catch is sizing and setup. A heat pump that was undersized, or paired with a bad thermostat setup, WILL struggle on a -5°F morning. This is what most Kansas homeowners actually need to know.

What "cold-climate rated" actually means

Modern inverter heat pumps like the Daikin Fit are rated to produce useful heat down to -13°F and are certified by the DOE Cold Climate Heat Pump Challenge to keep an efficiency (COP) above 1.75 at 5°F. Older single-stage units from 2010-era brands hit a wall around 30°F — that's where the outdated "heat pumps don't work in winter" reputation comes from.

In Saline County we've deployed cold-climate systems on homes from 1,200 sq ft ranches to 4,000 sq ft two-stories, and even during the January 2024 -15°F stretch, the systems maintained indoor temperature without failing over to backup heat for hours at a time.

Why sizing matters more than brand

The single most common reason a Kansas heat pump "doesn't work" is because it was sized to Manual J assumptions from a warmer climate. On the Plains, we design for 99% winter design temp of -1°F for Salina — not the "5°F" some national installers default to.

  • A 2-ton system in a 1,800 sq ft home performs great at 25°F and struggles at 10°F.
  • A 3-ton system in the same home cycles cleanly all winter and never trips backup heat.
  • That difference is why we do a full Manual J load calc on every Central Kansas install — not a rule-of-thumb.

What about backup heat?

Every heat pump we install on a fully-electric home in Kansas is paired with either electric strip heat (as emergency backup only) or a gas furnace in a dual-fuel configuration. The strip heat runs maybe 5-10 hours a year — during defrost cycles and if outdoor temps dip below -10°F. Dual-fuel systems automatically switch to gas below a "balance point" (typically 30-35°F on the Plains) where gas becomes cheaper per BTU than the heat pump.

We size the backup to cover 100% of design load, but you almost never need it. In 2024 our average dual-fuel customer used gas heat for only 18% of their winter hours.
