Free things to check first
Before calling, spend 5 minutes on these:
- Thermostat set to Cool, not Heat or Fan Only.
- Outdoor unit is running — walk outside, listen. If the fan isn't spinning, jump to the breaker check.
- Both breakers (indoor air handler AND outdoor condenser) are on — some systems have two separate breakers.
- Air filter — a heavily clogged filter can freeze the evaporator coil, which then blows warm air until the ice melts.

If the above is clean, likely causes in order:
- Frozen evaporator coil — turn the system off, run the fan only for 2 hours to thaw. If it re-freezes, you have a refrigerant leak or airflow problem. $180–$450.

- Failed capacitor at the condenser — outdoor fan hums but won't spin. $220–$320.
