How Often to Clean a Dryer Vent

The right dryer vent cleaning schedule based on family size, vent length, and pet situation.

By Duke Hilbert

For most Central Kansas homes, once every 12–18 months is the right interval. Larger families, long vent runs, and homes with pets should clean annually.

Your recommended interval

  • 1-2 people, short vent (< 15 ft), no pets: every 24 months.
  • Family of 3-4, standard vent (15-25 ft): every 12-18 months.
  • Family of 5+, or long vent run (25+ ft), or pets: every 12 months.
  • If you dry more than 6 loads per week: every 12 months regardless.

What professional cleaning includes

We disconnect the dryer, run a rotating brush and compressed-air system through the full vent length from inside AND outside, inspect the exterior vent hood, and vacuum the transition hose and dryer intake. Takes 45-60 min.

Key takeaway. Annual cleaning if you have pets, kids, or a long vent run. Every 18 months otherwise.
