UV Light vs. Air Purifier — Which Should You Add?

UV lights and air purifiers both improve indoor air, but they solve different problems. UV kills microorganisms on your evaporator coil; air purifiers pull dust, pollen, and particulate from the air stream. For most Central Kansas homes, an air purifier delivers more day-to-day benefit.

UV coil sanitizers — what they actually do

A UV light installed inside the air handler shines on the evaporator coil, killing mold spores, bacteria, and biofilm that grow on the always-wet coil. Result: cleaner coil (better efficiency), no musty smells when the AC kicks on, longer coil life.

Cost: $450–$800 installed. Worth it for allergy sufferers, humid basements, or homes where anyone smells "AC funk" when the system starts.

Media air purifiers — what they actually do

A whole-house purifier (Aprilaire, Honeywell, Daikin OneAir) uses a MERV 13-16 filter — vastly finer than a standard 1-inch filter — to trap dust, pollen, pet dander, cooking particulate, and even most viruses.

Cost: $650–$1,400 installed. Best for allergy families, homes near Salina agricultural fields (dust load), and anyone during Kansas wildfire smoke events.

Getting both

The stacked combo (UV + media purifier) costs about $1,000–$2,000 installed and covers both microbes (UV) and airborne particles (purifier). This is our most common IAQ upgrade for families with allergies or asthma.
